Should I Hire Movers or Do It Myself?
When the time comes to move you might find yourself asking, "Should I hire movers, or do it myself?" The important things to consider will be time, money, and difficulty. Once you have looked at all that goes into those three aspects, you will be able to decide for yourself how your belongings will get to their new home.
Believe it or not, time can be the determining a factor to the question "Should I hire movers or do it myself?" If you are in a time crunch and it's the middle of summer, you may not be able to find a reputable company that can do the move in time. Of course, if you don’t have friends or relatives that can help you with the move, you may not have enough time to do it yourself either. Talk with a few moving companies, find out if they can move on the date you need to move, and if they have the capabilities of having it all complete on the date you have to be out of the house.
Often the big factor to choosing between hiring movers or doing it yourself will be money. Moving costs a lot of money in any circumstance; be sure to list all the costs to the move. Create a spreadsheet to estimate all the different costs, including the cost of the truck, estimating gas, hiring labor to load the truck, buying all the boxes, paying off utilities and bills, etc. Don’t forget the insurance on the truck or any added fees like using their dolly. Use these estimates as your baseline, then see if moving companies can offer comparable prices to doing it yourself.
If you have a lot of big items to move, or are moving out of state or out of the country, it may not be possible for you to do the move yourself. You may need to be at the new place faster than you can get your items there. Moving big pieces of furniture requires a lot of muscle. Sometimes you just won’t have enough to do it. In those cases you can choose to hire movers to do it all or just hire labor to load your own rented truck.
